Harvesting Propolis from Propolis Mats

In the last post I showed the dribbles of propolis left on the box. But this is just a bonus product. Normally, to harvest propolis we use a propolis mat.

Our bees make a lot of high quality propolis. This is a sign of healthy bees, and we think it is because they just love our linseed oil-dipped boxes.

This propolis goes off to someone else to process into high quality health products like lozenges and powder.

But check out this great video of another beekeeper scraping down his propolis mats and bagging it up for sale.

Although we send our propolis off to a wholesaler and manufacturer, they don't scrape it down like the guy in the video. The propolis mats are snap frozen and can be flexed to make it fall off. Then the remaining propolis is water blasted off. I'm not too sure what happens with the propolis and water mix, but a trip to the processing plant might be on the cards some time soon.
